Natural Fly Spray....Suggestions?

Please forgive my lack of posts! We're still getting used to a new schedule, buying a new van and getting the old one ready to sell, so posting will be sporadic in the next several days.

Ok, now down to business. We were checking on our cow the other day and noticed there were 10-12 of those nasty, big ol' honkin horse flies on her. This is in addition to the 2-3,000 (it seemed like) regular flies.
In the past, we've tried using plain vinegar and vinegar mixed with the Essential Oil sage. We are currently using a product called Hi-Yield, it's VERY concentrated and not natural at all.

So I just wanted to ask all y'all with milkin' critters, what do y'all use?

Well, we have somewhat of the same problem. When I am milking the flies bother me too!

They hate strong smelling herbs, especially the ones that emit aromatic oils. Mint, Basil, Rosemary; and you might even try Lemon Balm. I just made a bug spray out of that and citronella oil. It has worked for mosquito repellant. Perhaps garlic? That works with dogs. That is enough to keep you away!

Just a thought, have you tried apple-cider vinegar? It's supposed to keep fruit flies away.

Haven't tried it on the big ones, though. I hate those horse flies!

Very funny, Spencer.

Dylan: I don't think we've ever tried apple cider vinegar before. Right on about the horse flies!

Hey Stephen! I don't know about horseflies, but I've heard that Listerine mouth wash in a spray can is effective for the little guys. Plus it smells great! I've never tried it though.

Yeah, vinegar isn't the greatest smell in the world!

Try rubbing pipe tobacco on ‘em, we tried this today and it worked very well.

Hope this helped!

drpaleo is on the right track when he mentions throwing knives. We used to use a set of darts. It was making a mess on the wall, until we learned to aim for a leg (to immobilize 'em)
;-)

On a more serious note, have you tried fly paper? It's non-toxic. Also something we used to call a "Big Stinky". It's a gallon jar with bait inside that draws flies. The lid lets them in & then they're trapped inside & can't get out.
