No Responsibility, No Freedom

The morning news in Birmingham states that the city council is considering placing a curfew on teens in the city limits because of recent violence involving teens. Kids under age 17 must be home by 10:00 on the weekdays and midnight on Saturdays. If they are caught outside after those times, their parents are fined $500 and could possibly spend time in jail.

As I heard the news reporter say this, I thought, "Oh well, there the government goes, stepping outside of its jurisdiction again". On second thought, though, it seems that for once, the Birmingham government is actually doing what it is supposed to do!

In God's economy, one must exercise responsibility in order to receive freedom, which is a gift from God. The French Revolution was the ultimate example of a people who wanted freedom but not responsibility.

But Birmingham has a huge problem. Besides a tyrannical government, the welfare system makes it more beneficial, from a financial standpoint, for women to bear children out of wedlock. These kids, who have no adult male example, are free to roam the streets, get in fights, use drugs, and do other terrible things. The governments solution is, "Let's educate them!", which aggravates the situation further.....

So, through the curfew, the government is now trying to teach responsibility to its subjects. Just one problem. Those subjects have never exercised responsibility in their lives. They just relied on the government to take care of them.

It's like teaching an old dog new tricks.

It seems to me that the missing link is the father figure. The kids that are participating in this violence probably don't have dads. So how would your dad keep you from getting into trouble? Simple. I know if I am disobedient, my dad's gonna have my hide. So I can be responsible and not be disciplined or I can be irresponsible and be disciplined. (Hmmmm.....I think I'll be responsible!) See how this tends to make the child a "better citizen"?

Ultimately, with God's help, the father will gain the child's heart.

Although I think the city council is trying to do a good thing, they really have bigger issues they need to deal with.

Helena, Arkansas has instituted a 24 hour curfew for all residents, regardless of age.

Anyone found outside of their home will be questioned by the police, and if a legitimate reason for being out of doors is not given, they will be sent back in or arrested.

In my mind, this is the ultimate insult to an individual's basic rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Ooooh! Is that just in the city limits? How bad is crime in Helena? There has been about one murder a day here in Birmingham (on average) for the last few years.

One a day! Wow! I didn't know that! As to the $500 fine, with the rebels kids are today, some parents are going to be very short of money!

I used to tell my Gov't & Econ students, "You WILL be governed. If you do not govern yourself, someone will step in to do it for you."

There is a power void, created by God, and something will fill it. Only the thinkers (and challengers), who have self control, will be free under God.
